Earlier this week, I asked those of you who follow me on Instagram to share what you will be shopping for over the next few months. Many of you said they will be shopping for wedding guest dresses so I put together a roundup for this quick mid-week letter.
A year ago, I published a guide to wedding guest attire dos and donts. The TLDR was that cultural differences, location, and the marrying couple’s expectations determine what you should wear. Many dresses below would be considered quite formal for a British coutryside wedding whereas a Lebanese friend I showed them to this morning said they would be considered casual for a Lebanese wedding where sequins and metallics prevail. In line with what I shared in that letter last year, the selection doesn’t include black, red (ask the Swedish bride who hasn’t spoken to me since I unknowingly showed up to her wedding in a red dress), dramatic cut-outs, neon colors, overtly sexy silhouettes, etc. Whether you can wear black is always up for debate. Saying black is ok or not ok as a blanket statement is not helpful cue the cultural differences (many cultures consider it ominous). I personally see no point in buying something I already get to wear so little and choose it in a color that may prevent me from wearing it to a future wedding. This newsletter includes:
Ten wedding guest dresses for hot and humid destinations. I get this very often; look for natural fibers, cotton ideally as it is light but linen also works. They are breathable, absorb humidity, and are moisture-wicking. Go for flowy silhouettes, avoid anything that clings to the body, and where possible choose unlined to stay as cool as possible.
Ten wedding guest dresses for a ‘cocktail’ dress code.
Ten wedding guest dresses you can rewear again and again. Formal enough for an event but versatile enough that you can wear them on summer vacations and ramp up that cost per wear. This is easier when the setting of the wedding you get invited to is rustic or casual.
Ten wedding guest dresses for a ‘black tie’ dress code.
Ten wedding guest dresses under $300.
Wedding guest outfits that aren’t dresses? Secondhand wedding guest dresses? Long-sleeved wedding guest dresses? If you want me to cover more categories in another letter or if you’re looking for something very specific leave a comment and I’ll help.
See you on Sunday! Love, L x
